Records Unit
Responsibilities
The Records Unit is responsible for maintaining and updating all department records and files, such as incident and accident reports and parking citations. The Records Unit is also responsible for collecting fees for copies of these reports as well as for permits and citations. In addition, clerical staff members greet citizens arriving in the building and direct them to the proper person to handle their concern.
Police Report Requests
Copies of crash/accident reports can be obtained here.
Copies of police reports and other police records can be requested by completing the Open Records Request Form.
Fees are as follows:
Copies of all records requested from the West Allis Police Department are reviewed by the Records Unit supervisor or designee prior to release. If copies of requested records or portions of records cannot be released pursuant to Wisconsin Open Records Laws, a written explanation as to why the records cannot be released will be prepared for the requester. Under most circumstances, copies of requested records are compiled, reviewed, and ready to release within 10 business days (requests for copies of police reports that involve ongoing investigations, requests for copies of large amounts of records, and requests for copies of videos such as body worn camera videos or dash cam videos can delay the availability of records). Please call the Records Unit at (414) 302-8080 during normal business hours (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) to verify copies of requested records are ready before stopping at the West Allis Police Department to pick up the records. The person requesting the records, and not a substitute must pick up copies of the records. Once records are compiled and reviewed for a specific request, copies of the records will stay in a ready-to-release status for 21 days. If, after 21 days, copies of the requested records are not picked up, the copies will be destroyed and records must be requested again.
For complete information on the Request for Open Records procedure, see the Open Records Request Form.
Paying Citations
Citations can be paid online, in person during the normal business hours of the Records Unit (Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., closed weekends and holidays), or put in the drop box available in the lobby during non-business hours to drop off payments. You may speak to an officer or pay warrants at any time. Online payments are made using your credit or debit card.
Parking
Parking permits may also be purchased during normal business hours or online. For more information, see our Parking page.
